Nosive Mcewukana
Nosive is 16 years old and is the oldest child in her family. She has two younger brothers, Sibonise who is 12, and Masibeke who is 11. Nosive was born in a rural part of South Africa called the Eastern Cape. she and her family struggled because her mom was never married and there are few good jobs in the Eastern Cape.  When Nosive was 11 her life changed dramatically. Her mom became very ill and passed away. Leaving she and her brothers to the care of her aunt Ngeziwe. She lived far away in a place called Masiphumelele, a crowded township very different than the rural place they grew up. Her aunt is so generous to have taken them in, especially since she has 4 children of her own and she doesn’t have a husband either. She works only 2 days a week, and with that struggles to feed, clothe and raise all 7 children. Nosive sleeps on the floor without a proper blanket, and feels fortunate on the days she is given enough to eat.

Ziyanda Velebay
Ziyanda is 10 years old and is the youngest child in her family.  She lives in Masiphumelele with her mother, Thobeka.  She was born in a rural part of South Africa called the Eastern Cape.  Her brother Manelisi, and sister Nosipho still live there with their aunt.  They have struggled as a family as Thobeka is a single mother and has been very ill, even recently in hospital.  She cannot work and struggles to care for Ziyanda while living with ongoing health issues.  Recently, they were chased away from where they were staying as they couldn't pay the rent.  A concerned friend provided a very small room large enough for a bed and a few belongings.  They share a bed and sometimes eat only one meal a day.  Ziyanda has been able to attend school and is in Grade 2. She enjoys reading, singing, and dancing. She does her homework at the library.  She also likes to help with cooking and chores at home.

Lusanda Mhlekwa
Lusanda is 14 years old and the oldest child in her family. She was   born in a rural part of South Africa called the Eastern Cape, but now lives in Masiphumelele with her mother, Zingiswa.  She has a twin brother, Simamkele (14), and younger brother Babalo (4).  Her cousin Sinazo (14) stays with them too.   They have struggled as a family as Lusanda's mother has never married, and is  very sick and cannot work due to ongoing health problems.  They stay in a small room where they share a bed and sometimes eat only one meal each day.  They often go to a soup kitchen to receive a warm meal. They cannot afford electricity and their roof leaks badly with the rain.  Lusanda is in Grade 6 at Ukhanyo Primary School, along with her brother and cousin.
